Trading card has come a long way in the industry and has been going strong to this day. As a Gen Z, I was one of those kids that grew up collecting trading cards. The satisfaction of pulling your favorite card will be the best feeling as a kid. Unlike other hobbies, starting a Trading card collection is easy and requires little to no inquiry. To add to that, trading cards have a fair price for those who wishes to start a collection.
As I reach 20 years old, I have since then stopped collecting cards and have been into comics nowadays. I will not tackle the topic of comic books since this entry is all about the trading card industry. In the Philippines, majority of Gen Zs (and millennials) have heard about Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon. These are the two famous trading cards that the collectors were collecting, and that the players are playing.
First things first, I would like to tell the reader that this entry would focus mainly on Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon cards in the industry. Second, I have interviewed a colleague that has been collecting trading cards up until now. He had agreed to go by the name of LEC. I have interviewed LEC for this entry to get a little bit more insight when it comes to this topic. According to LEC, Trading cards are collectable cards that are meant for trading to complete a specific card set. Trading cards are also used in trading card games such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic of the Gathering, Pokémon, etc.
According to LEC, trading cards have two uses to those who purchase them. Some trading cards can be sold with a higher price than its original price. The second use is to play them according to their rules. In trading cards there are different ways to measure a value of a card. In some cases, you may grade them by the rarity of the card or the function it may be used in the game. Collectors use some grading standards in some of the collectable card sets such as PSA Grading Standards or the Baseball-Trading-Cards.com. Popularity also affects the cards value or by what representative of the collection card is being purchased. According to LEC, Trading card industry is the community in which all trading card sports or fictional belongs in. Trading card industry has significantly rose in numbers in this time of pandemic. Maybe it is because people tend to find new hobbies now. LEC is personally happy with how the industry is going and is continuing to grow.
LEC also said that trading card and trading card games are something you want when you want to feel nostalgic. For LEC, trading card had been a reminder of the times when LEC was a kid. Collecting card have been a big part of his life. Having that feeling of getting that favorite player from your favorite team to your favorite character from your favorite set is very special for those who are collecting.
Without us knowing, trading card industry is a big industry that could let people earn money when people are invested in collecting cards. Cards are not all about money, it may also be the satisfaction of collecting a set of cards or a satisfaction of opening packs of card. Whatever it is people want form trading cards, it is about collecting and having a fun time doing so!
